THE Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) is seeking a
RM4 billion allocation for biotechnology development under the 10th
Malaysia Plan (10MP).
"We are finalising our submissions and processing for the 10MP and the
ministry is asking the government to double the investment," said
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili.
He said under the 9MP,
RM2 billion was allocated to support the development of the industry
and almost half was used for infrastructure, while about RM300 million
for research and development (R&D).
Mosti's Science Fund
also supports 47 plant R&D projects valued at RM7.8 million, with a
further 22 projects in agribiotech and agriculture under the Techno
Fund.
Of the total 135 firms that hold the BioNexus status, more than one-third are in the area of agriculture.
"Mosti has proven its commitment to support biotechnology R&D, as
this is crucial for the advancement of scientific knowledge and for the
generation of tangible outcomes in the form of improved development and
management of resources for the nation," Dr Ongkili said at the launch
of Universiti Malaya's plant biotech facility in Kuala Lumpur
yesterday. - Bernama
